How to write assembly instructions people can follow

Good assembly instructions get someone from a box of parts to a finished product without calling you. They don't need to be beautiful, but they do need to be clear. Here's a simple structure that works for most products.

Start with what's needed. The cover should tell people how many people the job takes, about how long it will take and which tools they'll need. If it takes two people, they should know before they start.

List every part. After the cover, show all the hardware with a short ID, a size and a quantity. It lets people find out early if something is missing. This template draws your hardware true to scale, so customers can hold a screw against the page to check it.

Write one action per step. Each step should have one main action, starting with a verb: "Insert bolt A into panel 2." If a step has "and then" in it, it's probably two steps. This template warns you when a step goes over 120 characters, which is often a sign that it needs splitting.

Use the same part names everywhere. If the parts list says "bolt A", every step should say "bolt A". Don't switch to "the long screw". You can tag the parts used in each step, which also helps you catch parts you never use.

Show each step. People look at the picture first. Use one image per step, showing the state after the action, and keep the viewing angle consistent where you can. You can upload a photo and turn it into a line drawing right here, or use your own drawings.

Put warnings where they matter. Warnings belong on the step they apply to, and they should explain the consequence: "Don't overtighten, or the wood may crack." Anything that could injure someone, like a tip-over risk, needs to be clear and hard to miss.

Test it on someone else. Before you print, give the manual to someone who has never seen the product, and watch them build it without helping. Wherever they stop, you've found a step to fix.

Check it before you publish. This tool helps with layout and wording, but it doesn't know your product or the rules that apply to it. Have a qualified person review the safety information, and check your market's requirements for your product category.
